Men and women use different growth strategiesResearch carried out in the United States has uncovered some intriguing differences between the goals and strategies of businesses owned by men and those owned by women.A study by the Center for Women's Business Research found that women are less likely than their men counterparts to use credit and equity financing and are more likely to rely on the Internet and e-commerce to grow their businesses.Looking at businesses with revenues at or exceeding one million dollars, the study also found that women are more likely to have started their businesses themselves (73 per cent) than the men (60 per cent), rather than having purchased, inherited, or acquired them in some other way.

The management gap

The management gapMany managers have an inflated opinion of their ability to manage people, new research from the UK-based Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has found. According to the CIPD, nearly three-quarters of British employers (72 per cent) a worried about a deficit of leadership and management skills. However, the CIPD's quarterly Employee Outlook survey of 2,000 employees also suggests that one problem in tackling this skills deficit is that many managers don't know how bad they are at managing people.

More women on the board leads to better resultsFortune 500 companies with more women on their boards achieve significantly better financial performance than those with male-dominated boardrooms, new research has revealed. A four-year study by New-York based consultancy, Catalyst, found that corporations with the highest proportion of women on their boards delivered equity returns that were 53 percent higher than those with the lowest representation of women.Along with return on equity, the report, The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance and Women's Representation on Boards, revealed equally startling differences in companies' return on sales and return on invested capital.
